e-Mail Etiquette

e-Mail has become a part of our everyday lives.  Some people don't realize:

  • When you use ALL CAPS, you're "yelling."  It can be very offensive to the recipient.  So, use proper capitalization, and use ALL CAPS only when you want to yell at someone.  (It's also very difficult to read a message written in "ALL CAPS.")

  • There's no such thing as "private e-mail."  Remember that it's very easy to forward an e-mail, and once you've written something, you can't take it back.  The U. S. government has a computer program that monitors all e-mail messages for certain words, looking for terrorist activity.  Additionally, most e-mail messages are backed-up for months on your server, and are available by subpoena.  So, be careful what you say in your e-mails.  The nasty comment you make about someone could end up in a lawsuit against you.
